Wizard Costume Pattern
courtesy of Rit Dye
Materials Needed:
- Rit® Dye: Evening Blue, Purple, Fuchsia
- Robe: Oversize adult robe or cotton chenille
bedspread and sewing pattern for a robe with exaggerated pointed sleeves
- Tunic: Long-sleeve cotton nightgown, adult
T-shirt or turtleneck, or cotton fabric (sheet or tablecloth)
- Cape: Additional similar or same fabric used
for tunic
- Paint brushes
- 2 to 4 Flashing star rings
- Cornucopia basket
- Polyester fiberfill/ Quilt Batting
- Craft glue
- Glitter
- Paper stars
- Pipe cleaners — regular, large and ruffled
- Stars, moon, sun — three-dimensional paper
stencils
- Canvas sneakers
Instructions:
- Following package directions, prepare
individual dyebaths using Rit Evening Blue, Purple and Fuchsia, using about
3 gallons very hot tap water for each.
NOTE: Before assembling costume, wash dyed items (grouped by color)
with warm water and mild detergent, rinse thoroughly, then machine or air
dry.
- If robe is excessively long, cut off excess
length before dyeing; save to make tie-dye cuffs and lapels. Dye robe or
chenille bedspread with Rit Evening Blue. Rinse until water runs clear;
squeeze out excess water. Wash and dry as noted above.
- Tie-dye cuff and lapel fabric. Gather fabric
into loose ball(s) and tie loosely with rubber bands. Dunk into Fuchsia
dyebath for 4 minutes.
Remove, rinse ball under running cool water until water runs clear and
squeeze out excess water. Release ties and rinse again until water runs
clear.
Repeat tying, dyeing and rinsing: first with Rit Evening Blue, and finally
with Rit Purple and Fuchsia dyes. Wash and dry as noted above.
- Dye tunic and cape fabric plus the cotton
cording Rit Purple. Rinse until water runs clear; squeeze out excess water.
Wash and dry as noted above.
Robe
- Prepare a concentrated solution of Rit Purple
dye: Dissolve 1 package of Rit powder or 1/2 cup of Rit liquid dye in 2 cups
very hot tap water. Brush purple dye onto the raised chenille pattern and
randomly over the robe surface for an aged look. This will give the robe a
bit more character. (This is the fun part, so it does not have to look like
a masterpiece!)
- Cut tie-dyed cuffs and lapels about 6 inches
wide and attach to the ends of the arms and front of the robe.
- Cut one or more small holes in the lapels and
insert flashing rings. Activate the flash button at the back of the ring by
pressing through the fabric.
- Sew a length of the cording to the neck of the
robe and attach the sun, moon and star pendants to the ends.
Cape
- Using the purple fabric, cut a basic triangle
shape leaving two long ends at the top to attach to the shoulders of the
robe.
- On the bottom edge of the robe, stencil the
star pattern with craft glue; sprinkle with glitter.
- Attach cape to shoulders of robe.
Hat
- Stuff the inside of the cornucopia with
fiberfill to act as a cushion and wig.
- Brush cornucopia with craft glue and sprinkle
with glitter.
- Attach a paper star to the point.
- Curl pipe cleaners around your fingers and
attach one end to the rim of the basket. Pull the fiberfill through the
curled pipe cleaner to help secure wig in place and to add texture.
- Shape a large ruffled pipe cleaner into a
moustache and attach each end to the rim of the basket.
- Fasten dyed cotton cording to the rim of the
basket to tie under wearer’s chin.
Shoes
1. Using craft glue, draw lines on the shoes and
sprinkle with glitter. Allow to dry.
Wand
- Twist large pipe cleaners to make a sturdy,
but not rigid, wand.
- Attach a flashing star to the top or use a
paper star decorated with glitter.
