Princess Costume
courtesy Rit Dye
Side Skirts
Materials Needed:
- Rit® dye colors: Mauve #19; Rose Pink #7; and
Fuchsia #12
- 3 different colors of tulle or netting, 3
yards long each
- Sequins (i.e.: silver stars or pink iridescent
sequins)
- Wide ribbon
for waistband, about 2 yards long
- Decorative touches (i.e.: tiny silk flowers or
thin ribbon)
- 2 strong rubber bands
- 2 buttons (any kind)
- Heavy thread
Instructions:
- Open the netting fully and lay the top layer
down, then second layer over that, then third. Cut the fabric in half
through all the thickness. Each one will be a side skirt.
Thread heavy carpet thread or button-hole
twist through a hand needle. Tie a spare button on the other end (this
button will not be sewn into the costume, it’s just so your stitching
won’t pull out of the netting.)
Measure about a third of the way down on the
netting and run a gathering stitch on this level through all your
thicknesses. Repeat for the other side of the skirt.
Take a measurement of the child’s waist.
Take your waistband ribbon and find the center of it and place a pin there.
Measure out from this point half the child’s waist measurement and place
pins there on each side. The extra ribbon will act as ties (don’t cut them
off!).
Gather your netting side skirts, and place the
netting over the ribbon between your pins. You should have your desired top
layer facing down over the ribbon. One third should lay above the ribbon,
the other two thirds below the ribbon, with your gathering stitch lining up
at the bottom edge of the ribbon. Avoid catching your heavy basting thread
in your stitching. Pull out your basting thread with the button on it.
Flip and tuck the 1/3 netting behind the
length. This will act as extra "poof" underneath the side skirts.
Fit the dress and side skirts on the child and
determine where you want to gather the bottom (we suggest a few inches above
the dress’s hem). Secure each side skirt with rubber band.
Now is the time to give the bottom a
"haircut". Cut the excess tulle at the bottom to your desired
shape (we trimmed them to a point).
Conceal the rubber bands with decorations,
such as tiny silk flowers or pretty ribbons. You can slip them behind the
rubber band to secure, or glue them on.
- Glue sequins on the dress and side skirts.
