How to make decorator floor pillows

How to make decorator floor pillows
From Waverly Fabrics

Decorator Floor Pillows

Choose a beautiful fabric and any size pillow form, to construct comfortable, decorator floor pillows for your home. First, select a favorite striped or printed fabric and coordinate it with decorator trimmings. Then, follow these simple-to-sew instructions to complete one or all of the pillow styles shown. To continue the do-it-yourself theme, select a Butterick Pattern of your choice and follow their slip cover instructions to give new life to an old ottoman.

Ivory Striped Pillow: A clever use of striped fabric requires cutting and piecing the cover of a square pillow to create the illusion of mitered corners. Brush fringe is added along the edges to accent and anchor the repeating design.

Yellow Floral Pillow: Decorative tassel fringe is the perfect trim choice for a floor pillow because of it's natural tendency to skirt the perimeter. In colors that coordinate with your fabric, choose fringe with long tassels to achieve a long skirt that may nearly brush the floor. Green Print Pillow: There's no need for purchased trim with a pillow that features a padded flange. The addition of quilt batting in the pillow construction provides just enough padding to create a simple false piping.

Tips & Creative Alternatives:

  • For fabrics with large printed designs, position the pillow pattern centered over the design to feature the focal point of the print and include all it's colors.

  • To make the small toile print pillow as pictured in the basket, follow the Assembly Instructions (below) for the Yellow Floral Pillow with these few exceptions: Measure a rectangular (not square) pillow form for size; add 1/2" (not 1") seam allowance to the perimeter as instructed in Assembly Step 1; and eliminate the application of trimming as instructed in Assembly Step 3 B.

  • Inspect the construction of your trimming carefully before purchasing. Some fringe features a braided header which is decorative and considered a part of the trim. The entire trim is top-stitched into place allowing the header and fringe to be visible from the outside of the pillow as in the tassel trim on our yellow floral pillow.  The headers of other trimmings are not decorative and intend to be hidden in the seam allowance allowing only the tassels or fringe to be exposed.

Tools:

  • sewing machine & scissors

  • iron & ironing board

  • straight pins & needles

  • water or air soluble fabric marking pen

  • yardstick, right angled ruler & tape measure

  • pencil & large drawing paper

Materials for All Pillows:

  • 54" wide decorator fabric: Calculate required yardage by reviewing Assembly Instructions Steps 1 and 2.

  • loose fiber filled, knife edge pillow form

  • matching all-purpose thread

Additional Materials for Yellow Floral Pillow:

  • Tassel fringe, 1" to 2" wide, with 1/2" decorative braided header, to equal perimeter of pillow form plus 5".

Additional Materials for Yellow Striped Pillow:

  • Brush fringe, 2" to 3" wide to equal perimeter of pillow form plus 5".

Additional Materials for Green Print Pillow:

  • Two squares of low-loft quilt batting; a few inches greater than pillow form dimensions.

  • Three large safety pins.

Assembly Instructions:

1. Measure Pillow Form and Make Paper Patterns

For Yellow Floral Pillow only:  Measure the pillow form from seam to seam. Using a ruler and right angled square, draw a square paper pattern following this dimension. On the paper pattern, add 1" to the perimeter for seam allowance and trim allowance.  This outside dimension is your cutting line. Use this pattern for the pillow front and back.

For Ivory Striped Pillow only: Measure the pillow form from seam to seam. Using a ruler and right angled square, draw a square paper pattern following this dimension. Divide the paper pattern into 4 equal sized triangles by drawing two straight lines from opposite corners, intersecting in the center.  Cut paper into 4 pieces along lines.  With additional paper, add a 1/2" seam allowance to all edges of each of the four triangles.

For Green Print Pillow only:  Measure form and draw pattern as described above for floral pillow. On the paper pattern, add 1-1/2" to the perimeter for pillow flange and seam allowances.  This outside dimension is your cutting line.  Use this pattern for the pillow front and back.

2. Cut Fabric

Yellow Floral and Green Print pillow:
Using square pattern as a guide, pin and cut one pillow top and one pillow bottom from fabric.  Using pattern again, cut 2 pieces of quilt batting for green print pillow.

Ivory Striped Pillow:
The paper triangle patterns have two sides of equal length.  Label the paper with the letter P, for center point, between these two equal sides. Label the third, unequal side, with the word BASE. With the points and bases of each triangle facing in the same direction position the triangles on the striped fabric so each base line is parallel to and measures the same distance from a stripe. Pin and cut 8 identical triangles from fabric, four for pillow front and four for pillow back.

3. Assemble Pillows

Yellow Floral:
A.  With right sides of fabric facing, and raw edges even, pin pillow front to pillow back along all edges.  Sew front to back following 1/2" seam allowance and leaving a wide opening at the center of one edge.  Clip corners and press seams open. Turn pillow to the right side through opening and press flat.

B.  On the pillow top, pin the braided header of the tassel fringe to all the stitched edges of the pillow through pillow top and back.  At the opening, pin header to the pressed edge of pillow top only.  Turn under ends of braid to clean finish.  Stitch braid to pillow through top and bottom at the stitched edges, and only through top at open edge.

C.  Insert pillow form into cover through opening.  Pin opening closed around form and using a hand needle and thread, stitch opening closed.

Green Print:
A.  Using a soluble fabric pen, on the right side of the fabric, measure and mark a line 1 1/2" from all edges along the perimeter of the pillow top. Pin one piece of quilt batting to the wrong side of pillow top and back. Following 1/4" seam allowance, baste each batting to top and back.  Pin, stitch, press and turn pillow cover following Yellow Floral Assembly Instructions Step A.

B.  Except for the open area, through all thickness1, pin and topstitch the pillow top to the pillow back along the previously marked line.  Leave thread tails long. Insert pillow form into cover through opening.  Push the pillow form out of your way into 2/3 the space and insert safety pins to hold.  Fold in seam allowances at opening and pin opening closed. Using a hand needle and thread, blind-stitch opening closed along folded edge.  By machine, or using small hand stitches to mimic machine stitches, topstitch along the un-stitched marked line.  Join thread tails by tying and trimming neatly. Remove safety pins and fluff pillow form to fill space.

Ivory Stripe:
A.  With right sides of fabric facing, and raw edges even, pin and stitch together one short edge of two triangles, matching stripes.  Press seam open. Repeat for remaining 3 pair of triangles. With right sides facing, and raw edges even, pin and stitch together two triangle assemblies matching stripes and center seams.  The base lines of the individual triangles will now be the outside perimeter of the pillow.  Press seam open. Repeat for remaining pair creating a pieced pillow front and pieced pillow back.

B.  With right sides facing, and un-cut edge of fringe even with cut edge of fabric, pin and baste fringe to pillow top along all edges following 1/42 seam allowance.  With right sides of fabric facing, raw edges even and fringe sandwiched between the fabrics, pin pillow front to pillow back along all edges.  Sew front to back following 1/2" seam allowance and leaving a wide opening at the center of one edge. Clip corners and press seams open.  Turn pillow to the right side through opening and press flat.

C.  Insert pillow form into cover through opening.  Pin opening closed around form and using a hand needle and thread, stitch opening closed.
