- Directions are for one size fits most (10-inches diameter/32-inches
circumference).
Scarf

8-inches x 76-inches, unfinished.
Crochet Version
GAUGE 10 sc = 4-inches (10
cm) on K hook. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.
Beret requires 1 skein; scarf requires 3 skeins.
BERET:
With K hook, ch 4.
Sl st to form ring.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in ring,
place marker for beg of rnd.
Rnd 2: Inc 1 st in each
st - 12 sc.
Rnd 3: *1 sc in next st,
2 sc in next st; rep from * around - 18 sc.
Rnd 4: *1 sc in each of
next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around - 24 sc.
Rnd 5: *1 sc in each of
next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around - 30 sc.
Rnds 6-13: Continue in
this manner, working 1 sc more between incs each rnd until there are 78 sts.
Work even on 78 sts for 2-inches. Fasten off.
Ribbing:
With J hook, Ch 4.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from
hook and each ch across - 3 sc.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn,
working through back lps only, sc in each sc. Repeat Row 2 for 21-inches
stretched.
Finishing:
With RS facing, sew short edges of ribbing together invisibly. With RS facing,
sew ribbing to Beret, easing in fullness. Top Knot With K hook, ch 7, leaving a
3-inch tail on each end of ch. Break yarn, tie ch into a knot and secure at beg
ring.
SCARF:
With K hook, ch 21. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across - 20 sc.
Row 1: Ch 1, turn. Sc in
each sc across. Repeat Row 1 for 76-inches. Fasten off.
Finishing:
Laying scarf flat, fold up 8-inches on each end to form pocket. Sew sides in
place invisibly.
Knit Version:
GAUGE 14
St sts = 4-inches (10 cm) on size 10 needle.
Beret and scarf require 2 skeins in color of your choice if knitting.
BERET:
Using smaller circular needles, loosely cast on 70 sts. Place marker to indicate
beg of rnd.
Rnds
1-7: K 1, p 1 rib.
Rnd 8: * K 2, M1 , rep
from * across the rnd (105 sts).
Rnd 9: Change to larger
circular needles and work in St st for 3½-inches.
Crown:
Decrease as follows (change to DPN's when necessary):
Dec Rnd 1: K 6, *ssk, k 12, rep from * 6 more times; k 6. K 1 rnd.
Dec Rnd 2: K 5, *ssk, k 10, rep from * 6 more times; k 5. K 1 rnd.
Continue decreasing in this manner every other round until 7 sts rem.
Next Rnd: K2tog around
until 2 rem. Work 2 rnds on 2 sts. Break yarn and pull through remaining sts.
Weave in ends. Wet block beret on large dinner plate.
SCARF:
With Size 10 needles, cast on 29 sts.
Row 1: K1, *p1, k1; rep
from *. Repeat Row 1 for 76-inches. Bind off.
Finishing:
Laying scarf flat, fold up 8-inches on each side to form pockets. Sew sides in
place invisibly.
STITCH EXPLANATIONS: M1
(make 1)
An increase worked by lifting the horizontal thread lying between
the needles and placing it onto the left needle. Work this new stitch through
the back loop.
ssk (slip, slip knit)
Sl
the next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, from the tip of the left needle to
the tip of the right needle; insert the left needle into the fronts of these 2
sts from the left and k them tog from this position to dec 1 st.
